We're hiring
We're a small team building something schools genuinely need. Everyone here owns real work and sees it land. If that appeals, we'd love to hear from you.

Senior Developer

Take real ownership of the stack behind a growing EdTech platform — React, Node, Postgres and AWS — and build against a technical roadmap that's already mapped out. Less time arguing about what to build, more time building it well.

Belfast, Titanic Quarter Hybrid, 2 days in office Permanent, full time £55,000–£65,000 33 days' leave

About Equipple

Equipple is a Northern Ireland-based EdTech company. We build parent engagement and school communications software used by schools and multi-academy trusts across the UK and Ireland. We equip teachers to spot what matters, act with speed, and communicate with confidence.

We're a small, fast-moving team at an exciting stage of growth, with a growing customer base and investment behind us.

The technical direction is set. We know what we're building over the next two years and the roadmap exists on paper. What we need now is a senior developer to own the stack that delivers it.

The role

This isn't a role where you'll be handed a detailed ticket and told exactly what to build. We need someone who can understand the why behind a feature, work out the best approach, build it well, and make sure it works before it goes anywhere near production.

You'll work across the full stack — React 19 and React Router v7 in TypeScript on the front end, Node 22 in TypeScript on the back, Postgres underneath, all running on AWS. You'll write clean, maintainable code, QA your own work properly, and communicate clearly with people who aren't developers.

We work semi-asynchronously: roughly half the week together in the office, half heads-down. That means real autonomy over how you spend your time, and it means clear written communication matters as much as clean code.

What you'll own

Not day-one expertise — the shape of the role as it evolves.

Front end

  • Interfaces for teachers and parents in React 19 and React Router v7
  • Responsive UI in Tailwind CSS v4
  • Data visualisation and reporting views

Back end and integrations

  • Node.js 22 services and RESTful APIs
  • MIS data sync via Wonde
  • Postmark, Twilio and Daily integrations
  • Postgres schema and query design

Shipping and quality

  • Features from scoping through to release
  • Your own QA — devices, browsers, edge cases
  • Code review through GitHub PRs
  • Automated test coverage

Platform health

  • Bugs, performance and technical debt, unprompted
  • Architectural decisions as the platform scales
  • AWS deployment and monitoring

Where the buck stops: our CTO owns the technical roadmap and sets architectural direction. You'll shape both, and you'll own delivery — but you won't be carrying the strategy on your own, and there's no separate QA team to catch what ships.

What we're looking for

Nobody has deep expertise in every area above. We're looking for a capable all-rounder with the right temperament, who can pick up unfamiliar tools quickly and make them their own.

Essential

What you'll need from day one

  • React 19 and React Router v7 in TypeScript. Hooks, state management and component architecture, with responsive UI in Tailwind CSS v4.
  • Node.js 22 in TypeScript. RESTful API design and third-party integration.
  • Postgres v16+. Clean SQL and type-safe queries, ideally through Drizzle ORM.
  • AWS in practice. Managed databases, S3 storage, CloudWatch monitoring, and comfort with containerised deployment.
  • Authentication and security. Sensible handling of auth, third-party APIs and sensitive data — we hold pupil data and take that seriously.
  • Git, GitHub and a PR-based workflow, with automated testing in Vitest, Jest or similar.
  • Five years or more of professional full-stack or front-end-heavy development, with a track record of shipping production code in a SaaS or product environment.
  • Self-directed, with a strong eye for detail. Edge cases, error handling and the polish that makes software feel finished.
  • Clear written and spoken English. You'll work directly with a non-technical co-founder, and half the week asynchronously.

Desirable

Useful, but we'll teach it

  • Infrastructure as code. AWS CDK, containerisation and orchestration — Docker, Fargate, ECS, ECR.
  • CI/CD pipelines across development, staging and production environments.
  • Our specialist libraries — pg-boss for queueing, TipTap for rich text, SheetJS for spreadsheets, Sharp for images, Recharts for visualisation.
  • EdTech or SaaS serving the UK education sector.
  • Video and WebRTC integrations. We use Daily for video calls.
  • Analytics and event tracking, such as PostHog.
  • AI integrations. We use OpenAI for AI-generated summaries.
  • Payment platforms such as Stripe or Chargebee.

How we work: we take pride in the craft and don't cut corners on the things that matter. We say early when something is broken, late or stuck. We expect initiative rather than waiting to be asked, and we care about the people at the other end — schools, teachers and parents who deserve software that just works.

Working here

33 days

Paid annual leave including public holidays and our Christmas closedown — comfortably above the statutory minimum. Our holiday year runs 1 September to 31 August.

40 hours

Permanent and full time, 9.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, with flexibility on start and finish times by agreement.

2 days in office

Hybrid working from our Titanic Quarter base, with a minimum of two days a week in the office and the rest of the week worked asynchronously.

Pension

Company pension scheme, with auto-enrolment handled from day one.

Training

Induction and role-relevant training, including any certification or software training the role calls for.

Six months

A six-month probationary period, with regular check-ins rather than a single verdict at the end.

One thing worth knowing: our year follows the school year. August to October and January to April are our busiest periods, so we ask for as much notice as possible on leave during those months.

Why join us

Real ownership of the stack, and a technical roadmap already mapped out — so you spend your time building the product rather than arguing about what to build.
